HOUSING

HOUSING RESOURCES

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Riverside County is here to provide residents with housing-related resources and support. The information below describes eviction protections for renters as well as assistance available for those who are homeless, or are in jeopardy of becoming homeless.

COVID-19 CALIFORNIA EVICTION PROTECTIONS

HAVE ALL EVICTION PROCEEDINGS STOPPED IN CALIFORNIA?
No. The eviction protections from Governor Newsom’s Executive Order are limited. A tenant may still receive an eviction notice from their landlord during this time. Tenants still need to comply with their lease agreements, and if they are able to pay their rent they should continue to pay the rent. Tenants may receive an eviction notice and need to respond. Tenants should seek legal advice.
DOES THE GOVERNOR’S EVICTION MEAN I DON’T HAVE TO PAY MY RENT?

NO!!! The eviction moratorium does not waive or forgive your rent payment. You should pay what you can to your landlord, because you will eventually have to pay all rent due.

WHAT ARE THE REGULATIONS IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY?

The County of Riverside is subject to the Governor Newsom’s Executive Order. You may refer to the order via this link: (EO-N-37-20). The Executive Order builds on the Governor’s previous Executive Authority authorizing local jurisdictions to halt evictions for renters impacted by the pandemic EO-N-28-20.

WHAT IF I AM NOT ABLE TO PAY MY RENT DUE TO LOSS OF INCOME DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC?
  1. You should contact your landlord in writing that you are not able to pay your rent due to loss of income due to COVID-19 before the rent is due. (See attached sample letters)
  2. You should keep copies of all correspondence with your landlord.
  3. Tell your landlord why you were unable to pay your rent.
  4. Provide documentation for why you were not able to pay your rent.
  5. In the event you receive an eviction notice you should seek legal help.

For an easy How-To Video of the protections that may apply for California tenants during COVID-19 can be in this video from Legal Services of Northern California (en Espanol).

“Stay at Home” Emergency Hotel Voucher Program

The County recently launched an Emergency Hotel Voucher Program to help unsheltered individuals comply with the Governor’s “Stay at Home” Order. The program provides temporary hotel and motel rooms for individuals who are 65+ or pregnant. Efforts will be made to find permanent housing for those taking shelter through the program. To be referred individuals can contact the HomeConnect Hotline at 1-800-498-8847.
